From October 9 to October 12, 2026, Tbilisi’s most defiant dance floor marks twelve years with a three-day marathon, and a manifesto about time, power and the possibility of change.
Twelve years ago, a club opened beneath the stands of the Dinamo Arena, inside a drained swimming pool. It went on to become one of the most talked-about techno institutions in the world, and one of the most political. Now Bassiani is turning 12, and it is not treating the number as a birthday. It is treating it as a cycle closing, and another one opening.
Why 12
In Bassiani’s own words, 12 is “a sacred number, a measure of time and a symbol of eternal return.” Twelve lunar cycles complete a solar year. At 12 o’clock, the clock folds back to its beginning.
But the return the club describes is not repetition. Every return is a genesis, a chance to change rather than to loop. The body, the city, society, language, memory, desire and power are all in motion. What looks permanent, the statement argues, is an illusion of permanence “that authorities whisper to us”, sustained only by the endless replication of power’s own logic.
The conclusion is simple and radical: whatever humans have created can be recreated by humans, too.
More than a club
From the start, Bassiani was built on one idea: that under the transformative power of music, a club can be a microcosm of emancipatory possibility.
It is a temporary place where people create a ritual unity. They share love, friendship, care, sorrow, pain, fragility, boundless joy and total oblivion. And, in Bassiani’s vision, they turn that shared experience into self-organised direct action against oppression and inequality.
That is why the club has never been just a venue on Tbilisi’s map. For a generation of Georgians, it has been a place to be free, and a place to practise freedom.
The dance of May 12th
That idea was tested in May 2018. After armed police raided Bassiani and Café Gallery, thousands of people gathered in front of the Parliament on Rustaveli Avenue and danced. It became a protest rave under one line: we dance together, we fight together.
Bassiani calls the dance of May 12th a testament to what a club can be, “and so will be every dance and movement of the future, too.” The date carries the same number the club now celebrates, and it is hard to read the anniversary without it.
The marathon
The 12th-anniversary marathon starts on Friday, October 9, 2026, at 12:00, and runs until Monday, October 12. The timing is deliberate: it opens at noon, the hour when time folds back to its beginning.
The club frames the weekend as the completion of a 12-year cycle of memory. It links what has happened with what is yet to come, and turns the road travelled into a new starting point.
The invitation is wide. It goes out to everyone who inspired, trusted and cared for Bassiani: those who stood with the club on the dance floor or on the barricades, who lit sparks of joy and resistance, who kept it alive time and again, “and who have always believed in change.”
